"12-Bit
Dungeon"

        an original video game composition

This track is in the meter of 4/4 and Tempo of 120 bpm. What you will hear is an intricate backbeat structure complimented by various percussion instruments and a fantastic blend of synth sounds. The light synth percussion you can hear in the back really adds the extra punch to the sections that needed it.

The motif-driven melody provides consistent development and variation throughout the entire 32 measures in the key of A minor. The structure fluctuates throughout each pattern and blends nicely with the rest of the track while holding the lead. In the second 16, the melody is brought down an octave and holds a very mysterious sound.

I chose a plucked pad sound to add its own complimenting melody to the already existing one and since then, I can’t imagine the mix without it.

As you listen to the harmony, you can hear a selection of 4 different diatonic chords and one diatonic 7th derived from the A minor scale (i, iio, iv, v, and VI). The first half of the track exhibits 3 unique patterns of chords, while the second half provides 2 additional uniquely crafted patterns.

This bass line paved the way for the overall vibe that I ended with. It is stabby and intriguing. There is a slight high-cut frequency filter on it to shape the tone and lots of variation in the second half due to the layered section. With the extra layer, I was able to manipulate the sounds and atmosphere of both the main and the secondary bass, while having some fun with the effect.

"Moment of Realization"
an original tension cue for television

This track is in the meter of 4/4 and Tempo of 68 bpm. When prompted to complete a tension cue, I wanted to give the dark/ominous vibe a shot.

This mood gave off the impression that it was going to require me to implement more of the technical skills that I have acquired over the past several months than the others, so I ran with it. This track isn't really a melody-driven one and it relies heavily on the layered pads, strings, and atmospheric elements to captivate the listener.

"Under The Bed" is the perfect match for a detective walking slowly through a dark house or a group of individuals met with the anxious decision of voting a contestant off of a show. I utilized pizzicato and staccato strings to give quick bouts of pressure that get slowly released by the ebb and flow of the deep pads.

The percussion in this cue is heavily influenced by tribal drums, African percussion, and moody altercations between phrases. The timpani and recorded shaker bring about subtle effects in the mix and help to create the ominous sonic environment.  With orchestral elements complemented by synth swells and a soft, bouncing bass line, this track builds to a break, though never truly loses its momentum.
